Firefighters Visit Elementary Schools for Fire Prevention Week
As part of fire prevention week members of the Mound Fire Department spent time visiting local area elementary schools, sharing the importance of fire prevention.
This year’s theme was “Every Second Counts: Plan 2 Ways Out!”
During visits, volunteer firefighters met with students in their classrooms offering fire prevention tips, discussing fire escape plans, and reiterating the importance of smoke detectors. In addition, students were able to see turn-out gear up-close and participate in drills.
Fire Chief Greg Pederson said that the firefighters are teaching students how to be safe when there is a fire and showing them how to recognize firefighters in their gear, reminding them to not be afraid. Additionally, he encouraged all children to get their parents involved by working with them to create an escape plan, ensuring that their smoke detectors are in working condition, and to remember to change their batteries twice per year.
