MOUND FIRE DEPARTMENT EARNS A HIGH FIRE PROTECTION CLASS RATING

Effective April 1, 2020

The Mound Fire Department recently completed an in-depth Insurance Services Office (ISO) Audit to determine our Public Protection Classification (PPC) rating. The ISO fire suppression rating, technically called the Public Protection Classification (PPC), is a measure of how well our fire department is prepared to respond to and extinguish structure fires.

As of April 1, 2020 the cities of Mound, Minnetrista and Spring Park in areas where fire hydrants present are now all rated at a Public Protection Class Fire Protection Rating of 3.

The audit is not related to size or condition of your home, but rather the community you live in and the capabilities of your local fire department, the city water supply and the 911 emergency dispatching systems. The ISO staff calculates and assigns its rating score using the Fire Suppression Rating Schedule (FSRS), which sorts communities into Classes 1 through 10. A Class 1 rated community is highest and Class 10 rating community is considered the lowest.

Prior to the recent audit, our Public Protection Classification rating in areas with fire hydrants was at a 4. After completing the audit the community-fire department rating in areas with hydrants improved to a PPC rating of 3.  The rural areas of Minnetrista that do not have fire hydrants also improved from a PPC rating of 5 to a rating of 4.

In 2019, there were 41,177 communities audited and rated in the United States, but only 13.2% received a rating at 3 and above. The new PPC rating of class 3 is an accomplishment the fire department and firefighters are excited about.

A bit more detail:  If your house is in a community with a strong fire rating class such as 1, 2 or 3, then your insurance company is aware that your fire protection area services are well-equipped to extinguish, mitigate and prevent fires. Many insurance providers use the ISO Public Protection Class fire rating when determining insurance premiums for homes and commercial buildings.

Aside from knowing the Mound Fire Department responds quickly and provides you with excellent fire protection services, it may also be a factor in lowering your insurance premium.
